The Complete Skincare Routine

The Complete Skincare Routine

Not every skincare routine needs 10 steps. Some are essential, others targeted upgrades. Here’s how to build a routine that actually makes sense.

Cleanser

Mandatory — Always

Your cleanser removes dirt, oil, sunscreen and makeup. Without cleansing, everything applied after won’t work properly.

Types

  • Gel cleanser → oily / acne-prone skin
  • Foam cleanser → deep cleansing
  • Cream cleanser → dry / sensitive skin
  • Oil cleanser → makeup & sunscreen removal (PM)
  • Balm cleanser → gentle but effective

Tip:
PM cleansing is more important than morning cleansing.

Toner

Optional — But Very Helpful

Toners prepare the skin, add hydration, and improve absorption of serums.

Types

  • Hydrating toner → everyday hydration
  • Milk toner → creamy, barrier-supporting, calming
  • Essence toner → lightweight treatment toner
  • Exfoliating toner → contains AHA/BHA/PHA
  • Soothing toner → calming ingredients (centella, heartleaf)

Who benefits most?
Dry, dehydrated, sensitive, or layered skincare routines.

Essence

Optional — Hydration Booster & Glow Step

Essence is a lightweight treatment step between toner and serum. It adds hydration and helps improve skin texture over time.

What essence does

  • deeply hydrates
  • improves skin texture
  • supports skin barrier
  • enhances glow
  • boosts absorption of serums

Essence is very popular in K-beauty routines, but still optional.

Serum

Optional — Targeted Treatment

Serums are concentrated and address specific skin concerns.

Examples

  • Vitamin C → brightening
  • Niacinamide → pores & oil control
  • Hyaluronic acid → hydration
  • Retinol → anti-aging & texture
  • Centella → calming & repair
  • Peptides → firmness

You don’t need one — but they make the biggest difference.

Eye Cream

Optional — Only if you need it

Eye creams are useful for specific eye concerns, but not mandatory.

When to use

  • Dark circles
  • Fine lines
  • Puffiness
  • Very dry under-eyes

Otherwise, your moisturizer is enough.

Moisturizer

Mandatory — Always

Moisturizer locks in hydration and protects your skin barrier.

Types

  • Gel cream → oily / combo skin
  • Lightweight lotion → normal skin
  • Rich cream → dry skin
  • Barrier cream → sensitive / damaged skin

Even oily skin needs moisturizer.

Sunscreen

Mandatory — Every Morning

This is the most important step.
Without sunscreen, all other skincare becomes less effective.

Protects against:

  • premature aging
  • pigmentation
  • sun damage
  • skin barrier damage

Use SPF 30–50 daily, even when cloudy.

Facial Mask

Optional — Weekly Treatment

Masks provide intensive short-term benefits.

Types

  • Clay mask → oily skin, pores, sebum
  • Sheet mask → hydration boost
  • Wash-off mask → treatment based
  • Sleeping mask → overnight hydration
  • Cream mask → nourishing
  • Peel-off mask → temporary smoothing
  • Soothing mask → calming irritated skin

Use 1–3 times per week.

Exfoliator

Optional — But Highly Recommended

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and improves texture.

Types
Physical exfoliator

  • scrubs
  • powder exfoliants
  • peeling gels

Chemical exfoliator

  • AHA → texture & dull skin
  • BHA → pores & acne
  • PHA → gentle exfoliation

Use 1–3 times weekly (not daily).

Complete Routine (With Optional Steps)

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner (optional)
  3. Essence (optional)
  4. Serum (optional)
  5. Eye cream (optional)
  6. Moisturizer
  7. Sunscreen

Weekly additions:

  • Mask (optional)
  • Exfoliator (optional)

Mandatory vs. Optional

Mandatory = skin cannot function properly without it

These steps are necessary for basic skin health and protection.

If you skip them:

  • skin can dry out
  • barrier weakens
  • damage accumulates
  • breakouts may increase

Examples:

  • Cleanser → removes dirt & buildup
  • Moisturizer → protects skin barrier
  • Sunscreen → prevents sun damage

These are the foundation steps.

Optional = improves skin, but not required

Optional steps target concerns or enhance results, but your skin still functions without them.

If you skip them:

  • nothing bad happens
  • you just miss extra benefits
  • results may be slower

Examples:

  • Toner → extra hydration
  • Essence → hydration boost
  • Serum → targeted treatment
  • Eye cream → specific eye concerns
  • Mask → weekly boost
  • Exfoliator → smoother texture

Build your routine step by step — start with the essentials, then add what your skin truly needs.
